The Center for Post Carbon Logistics acknowledges the world is beyond the point of single solutions for propulsion and fuels in transportation as a whole, and maritime transportation in particular. Because alternative fuels are strategic materials absolutely necessary to decarbonizing land-based transportation, we favor wind and zero-carbon electric propulsion wherever possible for maritime uses. Where these options are neither technically nor economically feasible, we favor biofuels from waste feedstocks, followed by the alternative fuel with the lowest emissions and toxicity on a well-to-wake basis as defined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Whenever non-zero carbon fuels are used, there should be a strategy and continuous commitment to reduce emissions until zero carbon has been achieved.
